Wow, I forgot something, go figure, way back in 1980, I was sent to Camp Irwin Ca with the 2nd Amorerd Div for 6 weeks of "let's see what we can tear up". Well I met a couple of Civilian workers that told me they were working on an old APC M-114 and asked for some help. They had most of it but were having trouble with final drive allignment. I helped them a little bit but our shop was burried with the new broken stuff.
Long story short, I ETS in 1980, moved to Phoenix in 82 and joined up with the National Guard. Yup, back to Camp Irwin. This time I knew the lay of the land a little and when I knocked on the door where I had worked on that 114, I was suprised to find those 2 guys had finished it and it was perfect! We took it out and tore up some sand! Thanks for bringing that memory back to the front.
We trained on M-114's and M-113's during AIT at Fort Knox. After my arrival in the cav I was my Plt. Ldr's driver for a few months. The M-114 was horribly underpowered for its weight. Hard paved surfaces were ok. Deep snow and mud, might as well park and blow it in place. In 1972 we traded 5 M-114's for 3 M-551's for each line plt.
We used them at Ft. Bliss... I Trp 3/3 Cav, (1976-1978) 20mm, 283 chevy engine....and alot of trips to the "boneyard".... did not fair well in the desert. Soon replaced by M113's with TOW.
