Although many Cav Troopers served during the "Cold War," not having to fire a shot in anger - do not let anyone belittle your service. You volunteered for duty in an unstable climate when war could have errupted at anytime. It was our service during this time that kept the Soviets and their satellites at bay. Stand tall and keep your head up high - we kept the world at peace for decades.
Thanks John for your comment on the cold war era. I was on border duty in 58/60 and just the other day i was sharing with my pastor about my "war wounds" actually I received them in a Gasthaus from a beer bottle. His comment was "what war" and I told him although ther was no fighting going on it was still called the "Cold War". I have always been proud of my part of that era and my duty in the 2nd Cav. HOOAH!!
I am very proud of my service time.. Not only of my time with the Cav.. but my 2 tours with the 101st and a second tour to Germany as well. God bless all who served, then and now.
Keep in mind all the casualties of that Cold War. A lot of servicemen gave their lives during that period and many times more were seriously injured either by direct action of communist forces, or from accidents in preparation of such action. Air crews took a heavy toll in personnel killed during shootdowns, but I'm sure there were high numbers of tankers and other combat arms that lost their lives during training exercises which weren't considered in the casualty tally. I think one of the reasons there is heavy opposition to the Cold War Medal is because it might open the door for the Purple Heart and other combat awards.
I think you nailed it dave.we had a mission we did it everyday and I am proud that I was a member of the 2nd acr.we were a tight group of soldiers and brothers and it is shown everyday here on this forum.
when I left the 2nd acr it was on a emergency pcs all I did was pick up my records and I flew out of frankfurt the next day.
they had someone else clear for me.I never even got a warm hand shake on the way out.
