We were back home and starting draw down. Nothing like the 4th of July in Amberg sitting on the grass in the park and watching the fireworks, the dining facility hosting a barbeque, fun and games around the post.

Happy Fathers Day to All. We were home on fathers day and preparing to close down Amberg. Sending soldiers all over the world to their new assignments, sad, sad days were in store for us all.

I had just arrived in GE as the Sqdn was preparing to deploy and had to follow on alone after making arrangements for my dual service wife and kids. I remember getting off of the contract commercial jet and being loaded on what looked like an old broken down city bus. It was still daylight quite warm. Our bags were all put on a stake and platform truck that was in our convoy. During the night the convoy got split up and the truck with our bags was no where around. Then it got cold...VERY COLD. We had no coats or other gear to keep warm on the bus with no heat. I remember praying that I would pass out for a few minutes to get some sleep and not be so cold. Our driver was lost and we finally just stopped to wait for the sun. When the sun did come up I could see the assembly area in the distance across the desert.

I also remember swapping out our nasty M3 Bradleys for some siny new M2A1 Bradleys with the kevlar liners and the impact gun that hooked up to the slave starter.

I remember having to switch planes in Rome. The pilot got on the intercom and said that one of the dash lights wouldn't come on. We also go the 2 big bottles of water which I carried around in my cargo pockets. The bus ride was interesting. I listened to the Steelers-Saints on AFN.

It was cold and raining the day we left Germany (C Trp)--7 Dec 90. Naturally, we were dressed for that--wet weather jackets. We arrived in Saudi at night, but it was still hot. They got us in formation--still in wet weather gear and immediately handed us 2 bottles of water that they made us drink. We waited for the buses to arrive. They finally did--all school buses. Away we went. On the way, we made the driver stop in the middle of some road in the desert and everyone ran out to take a leak. It must have looked funny. Anyway, we continued our trip and finally arrived at the Dew Drop Inn for our first night in country.

As a JAFO on L-32....I remember getting off that "big ol jet liner" and getting on this "bus" that looked like it just came out of a cheech and chong movie, with grease stains and all on the head rest!
