I remember in the early 70's there was talk about having white berets for the MP's. Wouldn't that have been a target for the average GI to "soil"!!

Black is for standard Army units, Maroon for Airborne,Tan for Rangers ans SF still has Green berets.

I never wore one in my tours. But do they wear them now for all Army, but changed the the color for the Special Forces personel? They did away with the Service Cap and the Garrison Hat. Is the Beret now the Dress head wear and service wear?

They look really sharp, but are impractical and uncomfortable in hot weather, and they don't keep the sun out of your eyes.

1I remember when Berets were first issued to ALL Army personnel. Special Forces troopers REALLY GOT PO'D. They were " above and beyond " all others and to wear the Beret singled them out. I agreed with them, they were the BEST. Ask any Vietnam Vet.

Congress did away with all Berets in '78.It was a HUGE thing here in NC,because of Ft. Bragg, there was a Post-wide Burial Ceremony. For a while I thought they were going to storm Washington.

Dave, the same thing happened to myself and some other Cav Troopers at the Fort Dix out-processing station in '74. We caught hell for wearing unauthorized headgear from some cadre there. We told them that we had already turned in our bus-driver hats and cunt caps and we ain't going to the PX and buying new ones as we were only hours away from getting out. Mike

We were still wearing the pile caps in the mid 1970's, but the tie string on the Korean War surplus hats had been updated with velcro and the fleece lining had been done away with. Once in awhile one of the old tie caps would show up. I remember our M88 driver, Les Paul (not the Les Paul of electric guitar fame) had one that looked like it was left over from WW II.

I believe the black berets started in the late 1960's (1968??) or early 1970's and went out between 1978-81 when "The Dueler" had the Regiment. The berets had never been authorized by the Army so we always got crap for wearing them by visiting IG's and stuff. Had my heels locked in an airport one time and told I was going to be written up for being out of uniform if I didn't come up with some proper headgear, STAT!! I didn't, and I wasn't. Felt real funny lecturing this Major on border Cav with a major case of the puckers going on and his nose in my ear.

To all of you troopers who wore Berets, I have a question. Back in the 60's we wore ball caps in Summer and Pyle ( pile ? ) caps in Winter. Those caps resembled the Russian Winter headgear. way cool. Did you guys ever wear Pyle caps ?
