Only thing Dad ever mentioned was how bitter cold it was and all they had to burn was dynamite. All the rest of the stuff I got from Dad's files, books and websites.
Since we're showing pics of dad. My dad is on the right. This was 1951 aboard LST Troop Carrier. This was on their way home, they had just left San Clemente Island. The man on the left is his friend Robert Martin and they still write to each other...

Hello Harry,
Thanks. Glad to join. I spent almost two of my first three years in the military at Camp Gates. I was sent there from Bindlach as a border driver initally. But after six months, I was returned to Bindlach, However, I knew the border so well, I was sent back for another eighteen months of permanent border duty. I believe the only reason I came off at all was because I broke my clavicle coming off patrol one afternoon. After the shoulder injury, I was returned to Bindlach until my pcs to Fort Knox. I was involved in several border incidents including a soviet block soldier crossing into our border, a soviet patrol passing within feet of one of the patrols I was on, and joint patrols with West German soldiers and Zolls when unusual activity was noticed by either party. I have been blessed to have served with many wonderful young men that served on border duty. It was a unique experience for us all.
Harry. I'm sure I was there when you were. Made me go to the 9th Cav in Augsbure but always back in Amberg and married a twin (Wiesmet) from Amberg and yes It looks like I came back just after you left. The other twin married to a guy called Rick Ward. Maybe you knew him? How did you get to Germany the first time? Me; By boat. USS Patch and secend time USS Rose

Hello Harry, I am back to try and pick your memory again. Do remember approximatly when the sgt was killed at gates, the one in between the track vehicles, was there another medic there with you when this happened. Wayne
Hey Harry, I spent quite a few tours at Camp Gates. The medic I remember was SP5 Lewis. I was at Gates the night we got the news about President Kennedy.
