Glad I could help out Dave. Yeah, border troopers always did " strange things" like cooking on the diesel fuel tent heaters. Can you imagine pork and beans and Wild Turkey ( the booze ) that my section Sergeant cooked at Graf one night ?? You shou...

Dave, the Unit Patch is what we wore when I joined the 3rd Sqdn. in Jan. of 1968. It was produced by the 2nd Cav. and was NOT an authorized patch according to the Dept.of the Army. The official patch came about one year later, the one with the bla...

My stepson's Father in Law is a Marine Survivor from the Chosin Resevoir. Sadly, men of that calibre are becoming fewer and fewer every year. Not many of those Marines left.

UN Forces ? They kicked some butt in the Korean War but what have they done lately ? In Yugoslavia, Somalia, and Africa it seems that all they do is stay in place and look pretty.

1I remember when Berets were first issued to ALL Army personnel. Special Forces troopers REALLY GOT PO'D. They were " above and beyond " all others and to wear the Beret singled them out. I agreed with them, they were the BEST. Ask any Vietnam Vet.

To all of you troopers who wore Berets, I have a question. Back in the 60's we wore ball caps in Summer and Pyle ( pile ? ) caps in Winter. Those caps resembled the Russian Winter headgear. way cool. Did you guys ever wear Pyle caps ?

We learn more about this Abomination every day. Red flags were up and flying but nobody wanted to make waves. If we don't end this PC madness we might as well kiss our Country goodbye ! I fully expect our current " Regime " to step in and try to s...

I hope that the ACLU never finds out about this location. The first thing that they will do is file a lawsuit trying to get it destroyed. Imagine the temerity ,the sheer gall, actually displaying the Ten Commandments in public. Sometimes I think t...

Tomorrow is Nov. 11. Veterans Day. I would just like to wish you all a happy Veterans Day and ask you to remember all who have served. Now, with my eldest Grand Daughter, my family will have 6 generations who have served, or are serving, in the U....

Jeff, I remember the bruise very well. More than once I would leave the Mountains of the Cajon Pass with it. I finally rigged a shotgun recoil pad to the butt plate. Looked like hell but it worked. Another thing besides the power of the cartridge ...

Bruce, it has been decades since I handled an M 1 and I forget where the gas cylinder plug is located. In 68 & 68 we had the M 14 and the plug was in plain sight under the barrel. We always made sure that the plug was only finger tight. Some of us...

Sorry Bruce, just an afterthought. Did you ever get an " M-1 thumb "??
October 23
Bruce, if you were qualified with the M-1 , you know what a sweet weapon that was. My brother, Art, ( Vietnam Vet ) still owns one. Back in the 60's 30-06 was surplus and cheap and we really went to work on the Calif. desert. HOWEVER, if you could...

Dave, hate to break it to you BUT back in the early 60's ( before the JFK assassination ) you buy rifles and pistols by MAIL. Magazines like GUNS an GUNS & AMMO were full of ads from Kliens and Ye Old Hunter. WW II Mausers ( NRA VG ) went for abou...

Back in the late 60's, my brother Art ( Vietnam vet, Camp Eagle, Phu Bai, RVN...on the DMZ between the North and South ) bought an M-1 for less than $100. TOTALLY RECONDITIONED to Arsenal Standards ! Back in those days you could buy 100 rounds of ...

James,
When I PCS'ed out of there in March 89, the CSM at that point was CSM Salas, who was promoted to that position from being 1SG of I Troop. Don't recall who the S3 SGM was at that point though.

James, Redeye -was the shoulder fired heat seeking missle. We trained with it in the forests alot.German and American planes would fly by us and scare the shit out of us with the after burners going full blast. We had training models.Always stopped at the gasthaus on the way back to Pond Barracks. On this site George Smith was my section officer, hell of a guy. Also Terry Foster was still there when I was in HHT a clerk.Him and I went to Paris in 1970.

I remember that Lt Holder's father (I believe he was a COL) was KIA in Nam during my stay in K Troop. I believe that Lt Holder then was sent to Nam at the end of my tour and then Lt Topping became company commander. Holder was tough but good. Topping was a poor excuse for an officer! I have no recollection of any of the stuff that is being talked about on the Amberg site. I don't remember any rumors of an underground storage area.

Sorry James, I don't remember any of the names you mentioned. I was drafted in June 1967 and went to Ft Knox for Basic. Then Ft Ord for AIT and Leadership Training in basic Infantry(which meant Nam). I then received orders to go to Ft Benjamin Harrison in Indianapolis Indiana for Paymaster school which was was from December 67-February 68. Then to Amberg with 3/2. I got a 3 month early out to return to school and was discharged in March 69 through Ft Dix then Ft Sheridan, Illinois. Started medical school in 1972 and graduated in 76 thanks to the GI bill! I will join the Oldtimers group. Thanks for the heads up.

I served in K Troop from March 68 through March 69 as company clerk. 1SGT was Folger and Company Commander was 1LT Holder then 1LT Topping. Good friend was Greg Griffith from Personnel in HHQ and Loren Krebs from I Troop, but interacted daily with your office. Sorry, but don't remember you. You were right, I remember the explosion but the Soviet invasion was big time. Any of this sound familiar. Haven't read anything on this site from anyone else that served in 68-69. Glad to have come across you. Hope you are doing Ok.
