Whew, the closest I came to water in a 114 was the time we had to drive one across a floating pontoon bridge during AIT at Fort Knox with a D.I. in the TC hatch. Wayne, I just looked at your pics. Not alot of freeboard when its in the water. I for...

We took 113's on patrol when Regt. approved and had them at op's many times. Although one had to be careful not to point the .50 cal towards the border. Same thing went for a Sheridan, the main gun had to be oriented away from the border.

Trained on the 113ACAV and 114 at Fort Knox in '71. We traded in our 114's in late '72 or early '73 for 3 M551's per platoon. Picture that 283 chevy motor pulling a 7 ton vehicle down the road. In the mud they would overheat causing you to halt to...

That's about the only thing those damn things were good for. I wonder if my old track ( B-14 ) was somewhere in that pile. mk

It is great to reconnect after all these years even if it was a brief transition! I remember making so many dumb mistakes in B Troop, but fortunately learned from them. I only just remembered that we had UPs and I think if we ever talked much more it was when you were on duty and I was SDO. Anyway, thanks for the greeting. Do you remember 1LT Bob Alger. He was the one I remember best from B Trp since we spent a tour at Gates together.

Hey Mike, thanks for the welcome. Yes I arrived in March 74 and replaced Jesse. I was pretty senior as a 1LT and made CPT in June so I was only in 1st PLT for one ARTEP and one Border tour at Camp Gates. Then went into S-3, SMO and finally D Co. Thanks for your pictures. I'll try to find and post more of mine from those days. Definitely a formative time for me too!

Mike,

Thanks for your response. Sorry I've been slow getting back to you.

As I mentioned, the Captain Randy Carlson was killed in Lebanon while on a U.N. Peacekeeping team in 1982. I spoke with his brother and he told me that the jeep Randy was in hit a mine and he was killed instantly. Even worse than his death perhaps was that his long-term research and a draft book on the French Resistance during WWII wa destroyed in that moment as well. Apparently Randy had a publisher and was revising his final draft for the publisher; a book was definitely the next step. Randy is buried at West Point. He was a great friend and a super platoon leader and troop XO. I think of him often. At this past Veteran's Day assemply at the H.S. of the School I work at I was priviledged to talk to the students and faculty about the meaning of Veteran's Day, and it's importance. I spoke of Randy, his service in Germany with us, and the tremendous loss of an American, and a friend. His loss definitely humanized the meaning of the Day for many.

All the best to you! Stay in touch.

Michael,

Thanks for your note. I can't place the face but the name rings a bell all these thousands of people later between then and now. Sounds like you've had a great life after the Cav.
I see that Bob Godwin has plugged in with you. The only LT for that time we've lost track of over time is Jesse Atkins. You may remember LT Randy Carlson, Troop XO after Bob Young, and LT King (he was in 3d Plt). Randy was killed in Lebanon in 1982 on a peacekeeping assignment, and Harold King died of cancer in 1990.

SFC Marino was a stand-up guy and one of the best PSGs I've known. If he pops up in here please let him know I'd like to hear from him. The Rock was a fun place back in those days!! I was lucky enough to go back again in 1986-1988. All the best.

Bill Barry
