We trained on M-114's and M-113's during AIT at Fort Knox. After my arrival in the cav I was my Plt. Ldr's driver for a few months. The M-114 was horribly underpowered for its weight. Hard paved surfaces were ok. Deep snow and mud, might as well p...

As I remember , a frag-rep was a spot report used only on the border to indicate a crossing of platoon size or less. A "creek-ball" was platoon size or larger.

Mike,

Thanks for your response. Sorry I've been slow getting back to you.

As I mentioned, the Captain Randy Carlson was killed in Lebanon while on a U.N. Peacekeeping team in 1982. I spoke with his brother and he told me that the jeep Randy was in hit a mine and he was killed instantly. Even worse than his death perhaps was that his long-term research and a draft book on the French Resistance during WWII wa destroyed in that moment as well. Apparently Randy had a publisher and was revising his final draft for the publisher; a book was definitely the next step. Randy is buried at West Point. He was a great friend and a super platoon leader and troop XO. I think of him often. At this past Veteran's Day assemply at the H.S. of the School I work at I was priviledged to talk to the students and faculty about the meaning of Veteran's Day, and it's importance. I spoke of Randy, his service in Germany with us, and the tremendous loss of an American, and a friend. His loss definitely humanized the meaning of the Day for many.

All the best to you! Stay in touch.

Michael,

Thanks for your note. I can't place the face but the name rings a bell all these thousands of people later between then and now. Sounds like you've had a great life after the Cav.
I see that Bob Godwin has plugged in with you. The only LT for that time we've lost track of over time is Jesse Atkins. You may remember LT Randy Carlson, Troop XO after Bob Young, and LT King (he was in 3d Plt). Randy was killed in Lebanon in 1982 on a peacekeeping assignment, and Harold King died of cancer in 1990.

SFC Marino was a stand-up guy and one of the best PSGs I've known. If he pops up in here please let him know I'd like to hear from him. The Rock was a fun place back in those days!! I was lucky enough to go back again in 1986-1988. All the best.

Thanks for the note Mike. Those were fun days. You are right about the 114s. You were probably driving the day a Hoienfels when for some reason we were doing a platoon in attack demo and Jesse almost came out of the 114 when you hit some bad ground doing about 30mph. Thought we were about to have one less LT that day.

If you need any help, you can contact Robb, or any of the 5 admins listed at the top of the page, or just yell out, another member may be able to help you.
And our only wish, ‘Keep it clean’, use our Real names/with Pictures(pix from back in the day, work best for searching for Brothers, but any picture will do).
And that you please tell all your friends about the new DragoonBase.

Thanks again for joining Dragoon Base, and for your service to our great country,
