Hey, what's the matter with Naragansett. I used to like it and Genessee and Piels and Schaffers. As far as light sensitive beer is concerned, it also happens to certain beers in tin cans though the smell isn't skunky. The Miller's we used to get i...
Wow what a story! I've heard those about many kasernes and barracks in Germany. There is Flak Kaserne in Ludwigsburg and there have even been similar stories about Bindlach which I have been told was an luftwaffe air field. There were wild rumors ...
Wow. Viewed the videos and found them depressing. I won't say I really enjoyed my time at Gates but there were some memorable occasions worth remembering. I remember the messhall made and served some respectabke coffee. Glad I never got to go back...
I was opting out for 'The Souse Family' or 'On Tap In the Can or In the Bottle' but now that I think about it 'In Heaven There Is No Beer' is a much better choice.
Well its not really a patrol yarn but there was an incident at Gates, can't remember the date. My wife had sent me a rum cake to the camp and the XO Lt Van Bokern asked me if he could have a couple of pieces so he could eat them while he manned a ...

The most challenging and satisfying tour of my career. Pretty scary too. Less than 2 months after I signed in the 2d Platoon Sergeant was relieved for cause. They say that if you leave the Second with the rank you arrived with you broke even and if you are promoted you done good. Under those criteria I guess I done good. My original Cav CO was a scary fellow but ultimately proved to be the best Captain I ever served under. His replacement was a ring knocking ticket puncher. There was a lot of panache when I got there but not so much by the time I left. Then there was the Squadron formation in the gym where the Adjutant called a bunch of names of men to be 'awarded' then the Colonel turned the formation over to the CID who promptly arrested the 'awardees' for drug related crimes. And the Acting SGM and HHT senior NCO arrested by the Graf MP's in the middle of the night for theft of military property. There was never a dull moment. And let us not forget the tank commander from Bravo Trp (I think it was) who 'sank' his tank in a farmers field during an unseasonable thaw during a winter exercise down around Lake Chiemsee.
Tell us a little about you now.
Retired as a First Sergeant from Readiness Group Redstone in Alabama. Living in So Cal now. Both daughters are married now, one to an ex jarhead one to an active duty swabbie. My son is carrying the guidon now. He spent 6 years in the Dragoons as a 19Delta before it went Stryker and made one trip to the NTC at Ft Irwin and Iraq with them. Between the two girls and the lad I have 8 grandkids with one more on the way. Not too lucky in the grandson department, girls-6 boys 3. Well you know what they say, "Into each life a little rain must fall".

That is weird. We have even more in common. I was there when the company transitioned to the M1A1 so I was there for that training. It was cold as could be that month. We went out on a pt run and there was half an inch of ice on the roads. I got lucky, the squadron master gunner asked me to help with the testing since I was an M1/M1A1 MG. He actually wanted me to stay with the squadron so he could get a platoon. The weird thing was that LTC Young had actually wanted me to take the job a year and a half earlier after my first gunnery as a MG.
Cav troops are all brothers in arms... I have alot of respect for the members of the 2nd ACR that I worked with in the late 70s... Garry Owen was always ready to serve with the men of Toujours Pret.
Howdy Michael! I was also in D Co, Apr-85 thru Oct-86. I was driver-loader on D-24 then moved to D-26. Plt Sgt was SFC Jones and we got a newbie Lt that didn't know his ass from a hole in the ground. 8-) Nice to see more D Co tankers here every day!
I stand corrected. Oh well, I was close. When I got to the Rock I thought I would go to D Troop 'cause I was trained at Knox on the M60A1 plus a couple of extra weeks on the M60A2. Ended up in C Troop on a Sheridan. Army logic. The M551 was a hoot to drive though.
Toujours Pret Michael,
Welcome to the new DragoonBase, the new Base has plenty of newer features, lots of sub-groups,(ie,F-Trp,Amberg,Medics,etc.) and links for 2nd Cav News and History.
Robb Russell has posted some tips for navigating the site (ie,photos, links, ect) in the Forum.
Make sure you stop by and read the latest Tacoma Dave ‘Triva Quiz’, learn some 2nd Cav history and you can even win a kool prize.
If you need any help, you can contact Robb, or any of the 5 admins listed at the top of the page, or just yell out, another member may be able to help you.
And our only wish, ‘Keep it clean’, use our Real names/with Pictures(pix from back in the day, work best for searching for Brothers, but any picture will do).
And that you please tell all your friends about the new DragoonBase.
Thanks again for joining Dragoon Base, and for your service to our great country,
Jesse Kelley
Good to have you here Michael. What's up with the old Char-B photo? I realise it looks like a tank but it's, well, FRENCH!!! Have fun browsing this site. Lots to see! Also, tell your son to join us.!
