Ronald D Barratt Father Joe Fessio

During late 71 thru Sep 74 (when I returned stateside) our Catholic priest at Amberg was Fr. Joseph Fessio, a Jesuit priest getting his PhD in Theology in Regensberg. Fr. Joe was VERY competitve and played basketball with young enlisted troopers. He also refused to stay in the BOQ and insisted on staying in the barracks. His masses were very non-traditional and the number of attendees grew the entire period we were there. What you may not know was that Fr. Joe's faculty adviser at the Univ of Re… Continue

Fishing Humor: I finally got aroundto goin fishin this mornin but after a while I ran out of worms. Then I saw this rattlesnake with a frog in it's mouth, and frogs are good bass bait. Knowing the snake couldn't bite me with the frog in it's mouth, I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog and put it in my bait bucket. Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without gettin bit. I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a little whiskey in it's mouth. His eyes rolled back and h… Continue

John Matas AAFES Burger vs. Nurnberg Bratwurst; What Was Your Favorite?

Throughout Germany, thousands of G.I.'s were looking for that perfect food that "hit the spot" (especially after a late night out). The Army and Air Force Exchange Services flipped some of the best burgers that could be found outside the States. The local Germans also grilled up a tasty bratwurst, served in a warm brochen (bun). The bratwurst cart in Germany was as common as the U.S. hot dog cart in New York. What was your favorite, the burger or bratwurst? (or was there something else you fanci… Continue

John M Walker Join me for one last Border Patrol in April (?) 2010

Greetings fellow Troopers, In advance of the May 2010 Regimental Reunion at Fort Knox, which I plan to attend (as do several of you), I've decided to organize a patrol along the former Warsaw Pact border. Since I was mostly a border operations puke I'll need some experience patrol leaders (Joe Harten? Joe Sellner? Ioanne Etuale? other volunteers?) For those coming from the 'States I would gladly put you up in my house --- I live a renovated barn which could easily sleep 20 in barracks-style on t… Continue

R Stanbery "Stan". The Grenze Patrol...in the beginning...

How was the Border Patrol done in the beginning? Before Camp Reed or Camp May were built, or for that matter, before there was an FRG, how was the BP done? Did the 2nd Cav have the mission right from the first? Continue

curt trood Errant 155mm round...

When I was at Graf in the mid-1970's doing FO duty out on the bunker line I called for a "battery 1 round" but only observed 5 splashes instead of 6; about 1 minute later a call came over the command net for all units to cease firing immediately, with all gun tubes and sights to remain untouched. It turns out that one of the guns had failed to load the proper charge (I have no idea how the safety officer missed it!) and one of the rounds impacted about 50 yards from the main post road. Nobody h… Continue

curt trood Gun explosion at Amberg

Does anyone remember an M109 blowing up at Pond barracks in the early 1970's? We had a photo of it up in the orderly room, and some of the older guys who told me about it said it threw an unfuzed projo clear down to the traffic circle. Not sure if I believe that part, but I'm pretty sure I remember the rest of it right; it's been a lot of years, though... :) Continue

Carl Gilmore Jr Some of my memories of W. Germany

A few things I can still recall from my Nuremberg days. I recall an OH-58 being dropped while being slung by a UH-1H. I remember an AFN reporter I had talked to about reforger died at a later date. The CH-47 he was in with some french and American parachutist crashed on an autobahn during an airshow at Mannheim? I recall being put on alert when KAL flight 007 was shot down by the Russians. I believe one or two of those blivets were dropped while being slung too. I'm not sure of the truck mo… Continue

John Matas The Twilight Zone and The Cav

Did you know that Rod Serling served as a paratrooper in World War Two? The writer and producer of the vintage TV series saw some action with the 11th Aiborne Corp in the Pacific. Many Twilight Zone episodes have military themes, even one about the US 7th Cavalry. Do you recall the episode I am referring to? This episode took place during the late 1950's or early 1960's. It depicted a Montana National Guard tank crew lost on manuevers. They slowly begin to encounter signs that they have traveled… Continue

John Matas The "Lost Motor Pool" of Amberg

There has been a great response to this topic on the Amberg Group page. Those of you unfamiliar with the story; there has been some speculation about hidden tunnels and an underground motor pool left over by the German Army after World War Two. Many Troopers have added their knowledge about the plausibility of this story or chimed in on how unlikely it could be. Currently, the former site of Pond Barracks is under reconstruction for civilian use. One trooper has reported that during this reconst… Continue
