Dragoon Base

Connecting the Troopers of Today with the Veterans of Yesterday.

When I was at Graf in the mid-1970's doing FO duty out on the bunker line I called for a "battery 1 round" but only observed 5 splashes instead of 6; about 1 minute later a call came over the command net for all units to cease firing immediately, with all gun tubes and sights to remain untouched.

It turns out that one of the guns had failed to load the proper charge (I have no idea how the safety officer missed it!) and one of the rounds impacted about 50 yards from the main post road. Nobody hurt, thank God. Does anyone recall this incident, or ever hear a story about it? This would have been summer of 1975, if memory serves.

Hi Curt, something similar happened in 83 or 84 in Graf. I dont recall all of the details but I remember it landed in a motor pool and took out a commo trailer. They had a safety poster made up with a picture of the damage and a saying, "Errant rounds can maim or Kill"
