  Yeah, we were at Camp Pitman when some kind of big maneuver came up. Can't remember who relieved us on the border so we could take part.

  Of course all the vehicles in 2d Cav were fully combat loaded. We had been in the field for a few days running around, and C Troop was on the outskirts of Inzendorf in 3rd Squadron's border area, due east of Nuremberg just north of the main east-west highway from Czechoslovakia to Nuremberg on a secondary road set up on the east side of town for the night.

  One of the Sheridans caught fire and blew up. Possibly a heater fire that started cooking off rounds. SSG Brow, in the driver's compartment, was severely burned over his entire body before he could get out of the tank and SFC Brown, in the TC's hatch, received minor burns on his face and hands before he got out. They were the only two in the vehicle at the time.

  Brow was evac'd back to the States and miraculously survived his burns. Brown was back on duty in a couple days with a good sunburn on his face.

  Amazing no one was killed in the explosion. At least a couple Sheridans had holes in their aluminum skins.There was 120 pounds of high explosive Octol in the driver's compartment, not to mention the 20 high explosive 152mm main gun rounds in the turret, fuel, small arms ammo....it was a big boom!

  Hey Caven,

  We might have crossed paths briefly at Camp Gates. C Troop was there when I arrived in January 1974. I was only there about three weeks before the Troop went back to the Rock. All the rest of my border tours were at Camp Pitman.

  Do you remember C Troop having a Sheridan blow up in July 1974?
