Tell us a little about your cav days.
FOB Warhorse, Iraq, 2008. The Regimental Tactical Operations Center buzzed with activity, a constant hum of radio chatter and keyboard clicks as we tracked missions and coordinated movements for the 2nd Cavalry Division. I was the assistant ops NCOIC, eyes glued to the screens, when the alarm pierced the air. "Incoming! Incoming!" The ground shuddered as the first rocket slammed into the FOB. Adrenaline surged. Instinct took over. We scrambled into the bunker, heads low, waiting out the barrage. Minutes felt like hours as the thunder of explosions echoed across the compound. The all-clear finally sounded, and we emerged into the dusty haze to assess the damage. The theater—our only place for briefings and rare moments of downtime—was gone, reduced to rubble and twisted steel. Smoke rose in lazy plumes, the chairs scorched and scattered like forgotten memories. The reality hit hard, but relief quickly followed: no one had been inside. Later that night, under the dim light of a hasty replacement tent, we joked that even the rockets hated PowerPoint presentations. But deep down, we knew we’d dodged something more than enemy fire that day. It was a reminder that every moment mattered—on the FOB and outside the wire—and that luck sometimes played as big a role as preparation.
Tell us a little about you now.

I bet you thought you were going to kick back at Ft. Lewis and get in some of that great, northwest fishing. Next thing you know, you are in the Cavalry and off country hopping and dodging ordnance. Such is the life of a trooper. Thanks for all you have done and continue to do.
Are you a member of the 2d Cavalry Association? It was the first and is the oldest unit specific veteran's organization in the US, established in 1899 by the 2d Cavalry veterans of the war in Cuba. Life membership is absolutely free, all you have to do is visit the 2d Cavalry Association website and sign up. https://www.2dcavalryassociation.com/ We also have grand reunions every two years at different places related to the regiment's history. There is a reunion this April in Tennessee. The 2023 reunion was in Atlanta, during which the 2d Cavalry Association unveiled a monument at Patton Park honoring our 2d Dragoons. Information is on the Association site. Again, welcome aboard. Toujours Pret!
