What unit(s) did you serve in with the 2d Cavalry?
3rd Plt, M Co. 3/2
Where were you stationed?
Pond Barracks (aka Moehl Kaserne)
What MOS or job description did you have?
Armor Officer
What was your rank/title?
2Lt - Plt Ldr
What years were you assigned to the 2nd Cavalry?
Jan-Nov 1985. I was recruited to serve as LNO to Panzerbrigade 12 at the Kaiser-Wilhelm Kaserne in Amberg. They were our Partnership Unit. CAPT Sinclair wanted to leave the job to become HOW Battery Cdr and he had to find a replacement from 3/2 so he could move over. I spoke fluent German. And they "offered" me the job . . .
Tell us a little about your cav days.
i was there a short time. Arrived while everyone was on REFORGER so I had almost a week to explore Amberg. Got to do one gunner at Graf on the new combined arms range; my tank was high-tank in the Sqdrn. My crew all got AAMs (except me. My Co. Cdr. told me to submit myself. I just couldn't do that). Also got to do maneuvers at Hohenfels in the snow. Awesome. Loved those Reagan defense budgets! Served with some great guys. 2LT Greg Whalley, SFC Gary White, and many others. At least I got to stay in Amberg until i left in March 1988. A great experience overall.
Tell us a little about you now.
I'm an attorney barred in CA and DC, but presently serve as an Intel Analyst in the FBI's Counterterrrorism Div. working on the GTMO detainee prosecutions. Formerly served as Dep. Asst. Sec. of Education in the Bush Admin. Prior to that spent years in private sector and earned my MBA at USC. Any Trojans in here?
Name a few buddies you served with that you would like to find.
Greg Whalley; Gary White; Steve Wesnoski; Scott Porter and others.

Hello David good to hear from you. ZStop over and have a beer. :-)
Hi Dave,
I do remember from Amberg. I also remember when we were in the platoon at ROTC Advance Camp at Ft. Lewis in 1983. It’s good to hear from you.
I branch transferred back in 1988 to the Transportation Corps. My next assignment was at Ft. Ord where I participated in Operation Just Cause and then commanded a Light-Medium Truck Company. I left Active Duty in 1992 while teaching ROTC at Eastern Washington University. I was out processing at Ft. Lewis when the 2nd ACR returned to the Ft. Lewis. I watched COL Eberle uncase the Regimental Colors.
I was assigned to the 39th Transportation Battalion from 1994-96 in Kaiserslautern. I did my 2 weeks Annual Training with them. I was mobilized in 1996 for Operation Joint Endeavor and commanded the Movement Control Team in Bamberg. My wife and I have been to Germany a couple of times. Our last trip was to the Christmas Markets in 2006. I’ve had many opportunities to see Amberg, Nurnberg, and Camp Reed. I also visited several places in the Czech Republic that we could only see through binoculars back in 1985.
I’m a Lieutenant Colonel in Kuwait on my last deployment before I retire from the Army Reserve. I’m the 364th Expeditionary Sustainment Command’s LNO to Camp Buehring and the 1/1 CAV. We should be home in July. My wife and I live in Spokane. I’m the Executive Director of the Inland Northwest Alzheimer’s Association.
I saw Scott Porter in Afghanistan back in 2003 when I was with the Office of Military Cooperation – Afghanistan in Kabul. Jeff Underhill, 3/2 ACR ADA Platoon Leader, is now a Brigadier General and the Deputy Army G-8. I don’t know where Whalley is. Shawn Graves (Major Grave…Squadron S-3) retired a Colonel and works as a defense contractor in Colorado. LTC (CH) Ingilterra (the Regimental Chaplain) retired a Colonel to New Jersey. He officiated at my marriage in 1992.
You’re with the FBI. You must have left Active Duty right after Germany and headed to law school. You must have put in many years to in DC to achieve the position Dep. Asst. Sec. of Education. Great job! I take it that you’re living in the DC area. I’ve been back to DC several times on business. Do you remember Mike Powell? He was the 2nd Platoon Leader in K-Troop when I was the 1st Platoon Leader. I’m sure that you know him given your position in the Bush Administration.
It’s good to hear from you.
Joel
Forgot to mention Steve is still in Germany.

Dragoon for Life!
Welcome to Dragoon Base, Dave.
12th Panzer is still partnered with 2d Cav. They were at the Vilseck Fest, Change of Command, and several other ceremonies last July when I was in Vilseck welcoming the Regiment back home from Afghanistan.
Does anyone in this photo look familiar? Wesnoski is a member here at Dragoon Base. Had the pleasure of meeting him last summer. This is he and Shannon Ryan at the 2d Cavalry's Reed Museum re-dedication ceremony at Rose Barracks in Vilseck July 25, 2011.
