Tell us a little about your cav days.

Arrived as a PFC and departed Sergeant. Border duty, tank gunnery at Graf on a Sheridan, Alerts, Inspections, etc. In the beginning there were 9 Troopers in a room, (4 bunk beds and a single bunk in the middle of the room). Drafted soldiers on a 2-year hitch and enlisted on a 3-year. Vietnam War was winding down and the Army was going VOLAR (all volunteers). The transition happened while I was there. Went to 4 to a room with new grey beds. All new Jeeps at the border and OPs went from shacks to trailers.

Tell us a little about you now.

Retired Army Major. Wrote a book about the experience: "Not Your Fathers War", based on a diary, letters home and a photo album.
