Sgt. Athey! So nice to see someone from the HQ platoon/maint section here.
When I was writing my profile, I wanted to add your name as one of the ones I'd like to find. For the life of me, I could not come up with your name. Looks like God took care of that and had you contact me! I have a couple photos of you at the Pond Barracks wash rack in or in front of the old 578. I have a few pics of your 88 as well.
I remember living in the 578 during training. Kneis heated his polish sausage in the cabin heater and the can blew up. Meat everywhere. Three of us were cramped inside when that happened. Another time I was riding tc hatch when I felt a tug on my pants leg while in convoy to the border camp. Kneis (who else) handed me a plastic bag that he pee'd into to toss out. As I pulled it out the hatch, I discovered it had 3 or 4 pin holes in it, leakig all over me. It was always something with that guy, huh?
After I got out, I went straight into a reserve MP unit near home (812th MP Co, 77th Arcom). Trained at Ft. Meade with a fella who lived 10 miles north of me. The guy wore a 2nd Cav patch on his uniform! He did the same thing I did. His name was Ortega and served out of Bamberg. He and I were in the 1981 Armed Forces Day Parade in NYC. We crewed several 'Rat Patrol' jeeps with mounted 50 cals up 5th Avenue Manhattan. Afterwards we ended up escorting two M60's down 6th avenue by driving up on the sidewalks to get to the next intersection to cut off traffic. Much like leap frog. We almost hit a bag lady LOL. The folks on 6th avenue never knew there was a parade one block east. We freaked them out pretty bad. The cops didn't know what to do and looked the other way. I think they got a kick out of seeing it.
I went on to work as a mechanic at a couple shops and when I had enough tools and know-how, I moved to St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands and opened 'Precision Automotive' out in Coral Bay and then moved the shop to Cruz Bay. Had a nice water view of St. Thomas! It was a good run. Got married down there too. Now I'm back in NY. Man, I have so many great memories of you and the rest of the guys!! May God bless you all. My chest still aches from laughing so hard back then. When we were not working hard to get the job done, it was goof-off time. I still tell stories about you guys!
You ever hear from anyone else? Lt. Mowatt-Larsen went on to CIA working with George Tenet and then Dept. Of Energy giving President Bush briefings on nuclear terrorism, tracking loose nukes, etc. His hair is now WHITE. Took a toll on him I guess.
Take care and regards to your lovely wife of so many years. It's nice to know you are well.
