What unit(s) did you serve in with the 2d Cavalry?
C Trp. 1/2 ACR - Bindlach, Germany
Where were you stationed?
Ft. Knox, Wildflecken, Fulda, Bindlach & Ft. Huachuca
What MOS or job description did you have?
I was truly honored to be the First Lady of Charlie Troop Wives. My husband Steve Ponder was troop commander in early 1980's.
What was your rank/title?
LOL - family motivator while husbands were on border, Reforger, Gunnery, etc. Currier of marks, food, clean BDU's to the border.
What years were you assigned to the 2nd Cavalry?
around 1982 - 1985
Tell us a little about your cav days.
LOVED troop wives. Provided support to wives when possible. Organized meetings and activities to keep morale up while troop was on the border, Reforger, gunnery, etc. Organized welcome home rallies at the rail head / motor pool when troop returned home.Organized trips for families to visit the troop on the border. Previously, I was the Director of Dependent Youth Activities while we were assigned to Wildflecken and I commuted back to Wildflecken when we transferred to Fulda A Trp 1/11th ACR. Continued working for Morale Support in Bindlach as the Recreation Center Director.
Tell us a little about you now.
Education Specialist at Ft. Huachuca, AZ and Ft. Ritchie, MD. Assisted soldiers assigned to the President while he was at Camp David. Supported units assigned to Site R, underground signal command. Congress decided to close our post. I was offered Ed Specialist position in Fulda Germany. Decided to "retire early". Sure seems strange after all the military years to be settled in one place. I still get the urge to move every three years. LOL
Name a few buddies you served with that you would like to find.
God dearly bless all the soldiers and families assigned to the 2nd Cav. You have been in my thoughts and prayers all through the war years. The Cav will always be my family. Toujours Prêt

Hi Ellen - My wife Johnnie and I were with you and Steve from 82-85. Some of my fondest memories of our How Btry time in Bindlach was serving as Fire Support Team Chief for Steve for our first year. We spent many great weeks traveling around together in the back of the commander's M113. Wonderful assignment in a great unit. Hope all is well in your world!
Hey Ellen,
Hope you are well. My name is Chuck Barham and I was assigned to 1st HOW, worked mostly for Skip Hall. I still stay in touch with Debbie Spohn a couple of times a year. Hope you have a great 2023!
Best - Chuck
Happy Birthday Ellen. Birthdays seem to come along much much quicker than they used to. Take time to do something OUTRAGEOUS today. Its' your day. God Bless.
Happy Birthday..... Hope you have a great day...
Things would have turned out a lot different with me if there was a First Lady of C Troop when I had some problems in the last few months of my tour. I got married to my high school sweetheart on leave and she joined me in my last year. I thought I would have a career in the Army, but things changed drastically with her there. So, you did a good thing getting involved with the guys and their families. Thanks for your service.
Ellen, also wanted to add to my welcome, a thankyou to you and your husband for your srevice to this country,...
