What unit(s) did you serve in with the 2d Cavalry?
D Company, 3rd Plt
Where were you stationed?
Christensen Barracks, Bindlach Germany. I had a chance encounter just a few days ago to visit the old post. It's a thriving community now. The Troop barracks and Mess Hall are long gone but the housing area is still there and looks beautiful. The D Company and HOWBATT barracks is still there, it was turned into an Older Generation Home as is the Squadron HQ. I was so proud to show my family where their old dad was stationed, I like to think they enjoyed it as much as I did.
What MOS or job description did you have?
19K; Loader (I sucked); Driver (got the hang of it quickly and loved it); Gunner (Those were a lot of switches); and T.C (at a very young 22 years old).
What was your rank/title?
PVT when I arrived, SGT when I PCS'd
What years were you assigned to the 2nd Cavalry?
OCT 1985-OCT 1989
Tell us a little about your cav days.
Great times on the Grenz (Camps Gates, Hof, and Pittman). HTA and Graf were fun also. Had some great leadership which guided me in the right direction to make a career out of the Army.
Tell us a little about you now.
Retired from Active duty in 2005. Currently working in the GS system.

Hi Mike, happy to see you had a good career. I know how you felt at 22. I was 21 in 1/11 ACR when I became the track commander on the squadron commander’s APC and put in charge of maintenance for the S-3 sections vehicles. By the time I had arrived at D co, I had 6 years of staff time with increasing responsibility. I still remember SSG Wilson asking me how long I’d been in the army (it was 8 years), and his reply that he had more time in grade than I had in service. I’m pretty sure that wasn’t something to brag about. Seriously, I had outstanding NCOs and officers who mentored me.
