You would still love it over there. I had a blast both times I went back. Had a hard time coming home when it was over. If it wasn't for my old dog waiting for me, I might have stayed in Germany.
In anticipation of your question "who did I piss-off to end up at the Rock?", I'd have to say too many people to list. I had to screw up a lot and often to end up there.
Looking back on it now, I still have to shake my head at the incredible chain of events. Like some twisted dark comedy that just couldn't go any other way. Still very much feeling the ripple effect from those times.
Damn, what a nightmare. To be in Bamberg and NOT in the 2d Cav!!
I don't regret not reenlisting after my year was up, but I sure do miss the guys I served with. I've talked to a few of them over the years, but the only one I've seen face-to-face since then is my old C Troop CO, Tom Molino. He went on to be 2d Squadron commander, and later Regimental commander. When I caught up with him in Vilseck 2008, where the Regiment is now, he was the president of the 2d Cavalry Association.
Went back to Germany in 2008 and 2011. Visited the Rock both times. Not many of the original buildings left. It's a housing development now, Bindlacherberg. HQ building is an old folks asylum. Motor pool is still there, divided up among several businesses. One of them restores old American cars from the 50's and 60's.
Camp Gates is gone. A friend who still lives in Bayreuth sent me an article from the local paper recently about Gates being leveled. It's a field full of solar panels now! I spent all my border time at Camp Pitman, although my first couple weeks with the 2d Cav were at Camp Gates. Thought I'd died and gone to hell!!!

Aaron,
Welcome to Dragoon Base.
Just got one question for ya.....who did you piss-off to end up at The Rock?
Checked our members roster and none of your buddies was on it, but I'm sure there are some guys around who were on the Rock same time as you and ate the same dirt, maybe even A Troop. We've got over 1800 members.
Kick off your boots and make yourself at home. The Dragoon Saloon is over at the Oldtimers group.
