  One day while on patrol, I stopped at the Zoll House at Bayerisch Eisenstein. We meet a BGS patrol and were talking at the gate. An older couple (today, our ages) had just crossed into Germany and exited the car. They had tears in their eyes and started hugging the BGS and my patrol and me. They were that happy to be in the West. The  BGS informed me about how hard it is to left Czeck. Into the West.we all talked more about those people.It had a big impact on me. I didn't realize the importance of our rights and freeedoms that I took for granted.It took a while for that day to sink in, but it changed my whole outlook on my country and my taken for granted freedoms.It must have been a great day in your country and other Eastern countries when the wall came down. I would have loved to have been on the border during that time.

  I served at Camp Rotz and Regen, 1970 1973. I spent a number of summer days having lunch with the enemy on the border line. We would stop at the  closest Guesthaus,  uy some food and drinks, then set up at the border near a tower. It didn't take long for the enemy to come join us. Learned a lot about our fellow soilders under a different flag.

  My Friend,Ivan,I seen that it was your birthday,and  meant to leave a wish for  a Happy Birthday and many more to come...may the Dolphin find you.... I am aday or two late ,I am sorry for this, but still amm hoping that you had a grand day on your Birthday.. How have you been?, good I hope...   we here in Iowa have had strange weather both in the Spring and so far the Summer!!! mother-nature surely has a mind of her own!!!   The Spring was very wet and our farmers here had trouble getting there crops in the ground,etc.  then it got real hot for awhile and now the nights have been unseasonly chilly!!!  We will survive for another day,sometimes that is how it goes...  got to get ready for work,my friend,take care and    Happy Birthday.... how is your hip,(??) not sure if this is right on which part but I hope you healing good...

  Hello Ivan

  There was a border incident  at the Waidhaus crossing in 1965 where several Czech Army soldiers tried to cross the border at 4am. They tossed 3 grenades and only one soldier made it across. Do you know anything about this? I have photos.

  hello Ivan, had a thought to run by you that I find interesting... On are public television channel they ran special on the  "Beatles" the group from England.. the story revolved around the story that behind the "iron curtian" they were evil and it went on with interviews of people and told interesting stories of how it was really understood by the young fans there??? seems like the Beatles were  enjoyed just the same as the young here there as here.. Anyway when I was watching the show I could not help but think of the new found friend ...  Hope this  post finds you well and thing are well with you...

  Ivan. good day to you .. first every one would see  that you commented to me  and then I think if they want to read post they would go to my page ,which is alright  w/me, I  am sure that all would like what you write..  I actually worked on turrets on our tanks ,mechanic so to speak ,but at times alittle more technical than routine. I did not actually do patrols on border ,because of my job.. In our section we had wreckers and they went to actual border camps on occasions and I would assist them .. I guess I mainly back up or support to the rest of squadron... I grew up on a farm in Iowa so the time I was in military was abig adventure and lok back on it as abig part of my life among other thing too.. I am married and have a 13 year old boy that is the center of our (wife Kathy) life w/ baseball ,sports etc.. I found your story about mushrooms interesting.... not sure what english name for them either ... we use to look for mushrooms also.... gotta eat...well now I've said alot ......Take care for now... I am 59,and still work,which I need to get back to...
