Government archives won't do you any good for individual records unless you have a name or SSN. You might be able to get unit rosters though, but they won't have photos.

You might be able to try this and see what happens.

Hi Joe, It was good speaking with you the other day. I hope it was not overwhelming. Keep us posted on things. I have some research going on here too. Have a great weekend,

      Patrick

Joe you certainly have an interesting story and mystery to solve. You are about my age and I have never been to Bindlach so I can offer no more then emotional support.

I am curious about the name Henry which may help. Why were you named Henry? Was your dad your granddad's name perhaps?getting the clues on the type of unit and duty such as tanker or truck driver will help a lot in the den.

      Good luck!

Cool you were able to get/stay connected with your birth mother. Do you speak German?

I wanted you to see this pic attached. The reason I asked about the spelling of the name is because of a photo in the book. the picture does not align with the name I noted as similar to Alston but when I was looking through the book I saw the photo and I thought I was looking at you. I checked the names on the side and saw the similar name and thought we hit pay dirt but the name does not align with the photo numerically. If you zoom into the picture at the smaller pictures and the one directly below William D. Carter (Commander) and put your picture of you with your girls from the Dragoon Base photos you loaded beside it, man it is uncanny the resemblance. I put it beside all three photos you have and it is amazing. I thought maybe they had the names out of sequence. This guy would be Robert David according to name list so it looks like it is only a coincidence. One of the guys over in Bindlach had his picture taken with a local police officer back in 1988. When he was looking at the photos one of his buddies said "where'd Biddy get the coat and hat?" his reply was "That's not Biddy". They brought the photo to me to verify and still did not believe me either. Even my mom thought it was me. I have always heard we all have a twin out there.

      Joe,
I see you plan on visiting Bindlach this fall. Patrick Biddy and I visited there briefly last November, after finding my old house in Bayreuth.

You came to the States the same time we came back, 1957. Dad left the 2nd Cavalry in 1955, serving with several different units in Germany until we went to Boston in 1957. The entire 2nd Cavalry left Germany in 1956, then returned in 1958.

Do you have any information at all about your dad that may help in the search? Was he an officer? What his job was in the Army? Cook, tanker, artilleryman, radio operator, truck driver? By the way, my dad's name was also Henry (Gettman). My grandfather was a German immigrant.

I'll try and scan it here soon. Old so its kind of fragile but I'll try and get it for you. I live near Park Road Shopping Center. I work in center city area for Mecklenburg County. you came down from PA for a show in Charlotte? What show was it. Belk Theater is nice. Blumenthal is another one. Lots happening in Charlotte. 15 years ago not much was there. Just opened movies there as well. I'm supposed to be on my way to Germany now but my ride stiffed me. Could not make it to the airport in time. Was hoping to meet some friends in Bindlach. They live on "In Der Lohe" going down the hill. I try and get back over every so often. Love the place. May I ask how you ended up in PA?

      Joe,
Go to this page and show it to your mother to see if she recognizes anyone. http://history.dragoons.org/modules/gallery/Troop_Portraits/Bindlac...

This is part of the HQ Troop roster from 1954 Bindlach. We can at least eliminate that if he is not there.

We lived on Parsefalstrasse in Bayreuth, near the Wagner Opera House, in 1954.

Wilfred Collins and Gordon Francis were both in Bindlach during the 1953-55 time frame. Drop them a note.
