What unit(s) did you serve in with the 2d Cavalry?
D Company, 1/2 ACR at Bindlach. I was at Camp Gates from about December 1978 to January 1980. I was a SP/4 running the messhall after SSGT Betancourt went PCS to the world.
Where were you stationed?
Bindlach Germany for 1 year, with a 30 day at Camp Gates, then permanent party at Camp Gates from about December 1978 to January 1980.
What MOS or job description did you have?
94B. I cooked for about 70 of my very closest friends! I had the key to the room at Heinz's Gasthof in Brand for that year. For free! I wonder who has the key now?
What was your rank/title?
SP/4, Mess SGT.
What years were you assigned to the 2nd Cavalry?
1978-1980.
Tell us a little about your cav days.
As a cook I had the opportunity to be dragged while steering my duece and a half by a bridge tank to get through a giant field of mud while on maneuvers. The border was a terrific place for a 22 year old single guy to be permanent party. We went down town every night but the rotating tankers had to have a pass. I was totally the opposite of what it was like on a large post. No hostility toward GI's on the Czech border.
Name a few buddies you served with that you would like to find.
Kenny Floyd, Russell Dadd, David Dubbs, and his roommate Louie, and a guy we called Chief at Camp Gates.

Bob, I was at Camp Gates when you were there with D Company.
The food was always very good.
One time when I went on a patrol I took a cook along as an observer.
On patrol we stopped and picked mushrooms.
I do not rember his name, he was an xray tecnician as a civilian before the Army.
SSGT Betancourt one time in the field did not have a way to resupply rations. I drove him there in my AVLB to get them. They were quite surprised when he popped out of the TC hatch in his cook whites.
Robert. I do believe that I was with the AVLB towing you. I remember SSG Betancourt. The AVLB section would be parked near the kitchen truck in the field. One time I remember SSG B telling me that he had to get replenishments but his truck was not working. I told him that we could go get it with my AVLB, at first he thought I was joking. When I told him that I was not joking he got a big grin. We had the bridge off so there was plenty of space to load the boxes. He was a funny sight wearing his cook whites and a CVC helmet sitting in the TC seat. The look on the guys that were handing out the food was priceless when we pulled up and out popped SSG B with that big grin.
I liked the food at Camp Gates. There was a cook with blond hair that was with me on patrol along the Grenze and we picked some musrooms. I do not remember his name or exactly when it was, but in the fall.
