Jack: I thought Amberg was beautiful. I just never had the money nor the time to enjoy it. I was mostly tied up at Pond Barracks. If you remember back in the latter part of that time they were drawing down the troop strength to build up the 4th for deployment to the Nam. The privates and sp4 of the trp were doing kp one day and guard that night and then back to kp and back to guard. On and on. They finally enlisted K Battery but all that did was put the sp5's walking guard. And being an outspoken person I was always in someones doghouse. Even when I did nothing. I fondly remember being on paint detail and getting blamed for instigating the other two guys to paint themselves, when all l was doing was trying to do the task and stay as paint free as I could. I couldn't afford new clothes. I guess Major Tuberty and the Sgt. Major had a good time reaming Captain Flagg and 1st. Sgt McDaniels over that incident. I can laugh about it now but it was never fun back in the day when I knew extra duty was on the way. Just my perspective.

Jack: Shows how often I visit this site. I keep in contact with those I served with in the Nam better than I do with the guys from the 2d. Though Zamora and I do get together from time to time no one else seemed to do the same. Zamora got married again this past year. Sorry it took so long to reply again but one day my daughter came along and said she was getting married and it really sent me into a lot of directions but a straight one. All the planning on her part and the financial planning on my part. Never was real good with figures but I did know it was going to cost me a bunch. That was last summer and now I am getting back to normal.

Do you remember a night when you and 1st Sgt. McDaniels waited outside the wall trying to catch guys going downtown without passes? Maybe that happened quite often though. He was trying to catch me because he was sure that I had pilfered my pass from the last time I went down. Of course this was silly because I had turned it in, but he wouldn't believe me, so it went missing for quite a few months. Then of course the day after I had the shift of orderly it showed up again in the bottom of the pass box. It was probably there all the time but no one could find it. I told him I had no desire to go downtown. I never had any money anyway and town had no fond memories for me. I would go if Batts or Zamora or one of the other guys I hung with wanted to go but other than that I stayed in and got ready for the next day. I had to chuckle when the Top told me he spent the whole night out there, on a very cold night. Guess he didn't have much experience with an honest person. I also took the blame when put on that painting detail when the other two guys decided to paint each other instead of the walls and Major Tuberty walked in. I was the only one painting, instead of getting painted. I couldn't win for losing in M Troop. My time in the Nam was much more to my liking. You did your job and forgot about it. I got along with them all over there. I got to M Troop in the middle of a blizzard myself. Of course my shock was having so many GI parties keeping the 1st floor shined. I must say though. I did learn a lot. The old saying back then was that we would make someone a good wife. And my wife has been real happy.

Was in the Troop when you were. There is also a picture of Sgt Uhlig and my son (John Cuningham) in the Stars & Strips on his walk from Amberg to Nuneburg you wrote about.

Sgt. Dulaney. I just put it together. I kept running the name over and over and finally the motorpool came into view. The smartest guy(at least one of the two, counting Uhlig) in the outfit. You were one of the really nice NCO's. Do you remember a guy by the name of Wallace Henderson? We were together in the Nam. He left Mtrp before I arrived. Take care Jack

A lot of things happened in those days. I do remember Uhlig was always running, and he was not afraid to speak his mind. When you are smarter than the ones giving the orders, it is hard for them to say anything. I remember he always had a hard time for the old Nazis down town also. I wonder what ever happened to him? He was a hell of a nice guy. I know that he had bought a trailer house and had it moved to Florida and a week later a hurricane or something demolished it. I wrote Groves once while I was in the Nam but never got an answer. He was a hell of a guy also. Most of the guys back then were. We had to put up with a lot of crap all the time. GI's at the drop of the hat for the brass. Always being the show platoon of the show troop wore thin real quick. Did you get sent back to the states during the buildup of the 4 Infantry for deployment to Nam? Seems that a lot of the non coms did. Your picture doesn't ring a bell. But then it wasn't a real good one. I ran across of picture of Sgt. Bradbury on the 1/69th site some years back when researching, but no one in the unit would respond to my inquiry about him. Spc/4 Whinery went to the 69th also. I say him a couple of times while over there but then we spent all our time in the field and moved so much that I lost contact with him, and no one seems to know anything about him. Do you know what ever happened to Sgt. Babich? Zamora and I see each other now and then. His wife died a couple of years ago. She was really nice. I tried to stay in contact with Batts but he was always full of shit. The last I heard he was rising in the ranks of the North Carolina Prison system. I thing he was a lieutenant or captain. Still living on his wifes farm in Dunn. The last time I heard from him he said that Rivera had contacted him but didn't give me an address. Miller was working for the Lake City Police Dept. then disappeared. They say he moved to Arkansas. Hard to believe that one though. Guess that is all the new I have. What about you? Any better pictures? I need to make the mental picture from those days. Take care Jack
