Hello! I guess that neither of us do well when it comes to sending messages. I will backtrack and say that I do remember going outside in the park along the wall. I was actually Sgt-of-the-Guard that night. We did not see anyone while out there. I did not expect that we would, but when the man said this is what we are going to do tonight thats what we did.

My memories of Amberg are quite different than yours. I returned there in 2001 and 2006. The kaserne is quite different now. There is a restruant where the old mess hall was. Most of the shop buildings are gone and the place is now apartments and so on.

The reason that I returned in 2006 was to take my two children to see where their mother was born. You got it! I was married in the local courthouse in March 1965 and we both now live in Roanoke, Va. I am quite fond of Amberg and we visit our relatives when we can.

If you go on facebook, there is a fellow named Bob Leonard. He was thare around 1963-1964. I believe he was in 1st platoon. He is from Washington State. His E-mail is leonard760@aol.com. Robert Seguin (company clerk) lived at Castle Rock, Wa the last I talked to him. Well, going to run for now. I really will try to write again soon. I also have a couple of Pond Barracks posted. Jack

Hi Jack, I wish to fill you in a little about my tour with the 2d ACR in Amberg. I arrived there November 28, 1963. My first impression of the post was really shocking. It was a cold and dreary day. The supply sergeant was getting me settled in. I noted that a lot of the windows were broken in all of the building facing the parade field. I said, where in the world did I end up at, with the barracks in such bad condition.
The supply guy explaind that President Kennedy had beed killed Nov 23. The unit wished to have a parade and render a salute for the president. Well, the M60A1 tanke were new to the unit and there were no blank rounds for the main guns. A request was made to the German tank battalion at Garmersdorf for a tank platoon.
They responded and sent 5 tanks up to fire the 21 gun salute.
Well, guess what? The tanks were located at one end of the parade field and when the first tank fired some of the barracks windows shattered from the concusion. Regardless the salute had to be completed. Now you know why I thaought the barracks were in real poor condition.
More to come, as I can put it together. Jack D

Well Jack, I guess it's time I ask the obvious question, "any relation to 31st Colonel of the Regiment Charles H. Reed?"

Reidel was the clerk when I left. He hadn't been there long as the one before him went to the Nam as an undertaker. I can't remember his name but you might. I heard that he had to handle Sgt. Weeks body when it came out of the field and it shook him pretty hard. I told Zamora that we had corresponded and am trying to get him involved. But between checking how his stock porfolios are doing and his grandkids, he can't keep his concentration. Sounds like you left Amberg not long after I did. From what I have read the place really changed from how strict they were when we were there. At least in 1st Platoon. The first floor to way too close to everything. I just remembered that about 40 years ago R.T. Harris wrote me. He was working for the Cal Trans at the time. I think he was living in Modesto, Ca.. I tried to stay in contact with him but he never wrote back. Seems he was in a relationship with a wild woman. Maybe she did him in. Jack

Good Morning! I have read your comments. For the first, no I can't place Henderson. I have beeen going over the days in Amberg and I'll bet I will remember him. I have remembered a lot of the folks that were there. A list of them will be forthcoming.

I note that you are from Vancouver. I was stationed at Ft. Lewis from Feb 1959 until I shipped out to Amberg in 1963. Beautiful country up there. I was able to go to the Worlds Fair in Seattle and it was great.

Up the road from you is Castle Rock. Robert (Bob) Sequin who was company clerk proir to Murrens used to live there. The last I spoke with him was about 5 years ago. I have his address, but just can not give it out yet. (you know privacy laws). Bob went into supply and we would get together when he was staioned with the 3 rd Armored in Frankfurt in the 1970s. I shall be writing again soon with quite a list of folks from the 2nd ACR. Jack

Hello Jack. I have been looking at some of your photos. I see the one of Groves with M-15. I was lucky to have been given the ride of tank commander when Groves and the crew did an outstanding job. Also I see Sgt Uhlig. This guy could make any machine gun purr. He was so good that he had trouble with the civilians from the defense department visited his arms room. They said that what he did with the M-73 far surpassed what the manufactor could do, but it was not authorized. Remember his run from Nuermberg to Amberg? Jack

Name a few buddies you served with that you would like to find.
