I arrived to B-Troop, 2nd Platoon in June of 76.  When I got there the B Troop was on the border, so in processed and went to Camp Gates.  MOS was 11C and was assigned to B28, the 4 deuce mortar track.  In 2nd Platoon the Plt Sgt was SSG Foreman and the Plt Ldr was a new LT, Vail I think his name was.  Captain Packer was CO, Ducote was 'Top'. Both 2nd and 3rd Plt were at Gates.  Some names from 2nd Plt - Kent, Clem, Conyers, Perry, Kenealy, Weisheit, Edens, Featherston.  names I remember from 3rd Plt - Sundtheimer (Gramps), Diamond, Casupang, Davis.  There are ore but I will have to pull out the Troop photos to jog the memory.  Loved the Border!

With your input and Ward's input I think I have enough info to confirm most of the names in my photos.  I am actually astounded that I remembered as many as I did.  Now to figure out how to change the captions on my page, but not tonight.

Thanks for the input --  jeez,  has it really been 30 + years????

Hi Scott,  It's great to see someone from B Troop here from around my time.  There are too few of us here so far.  I looked at your pics.  They sure bring back memories for me. Some of them are almost exact duplicates of a few of my pics.  Who was the Troop Commander then?  When I left in June '74 it was Capt. Maughn.  I see that you are a "flat-lander".  I am a cheese-head. Hope to hear from you again.   Mike

Welcome aboard.  Feel free to join in any conversation or start one.  Bunch of codgers, some younger, some older but all willing to help in any way we can.

      Hello Scott,

      Welcome

I'm trying to catch up to all those I missed when they first signed on here.  I'd like to welcome you to the Oldtimer's group.  Take a look around. You might see an old friend or make some new ones.

    • Dave Gettman February 15, 2011 18:21

Oh, I had a blast the year I was there. Wouldn't trade it for anything. Made some friends I still talk to after 35 years.

Sorry to hear about your losses. Tough to lose friends like that.

Nobody knows for sure what happened, but it is thought to have been a heater fire. The crew had jerry-rigged an M113 heater in it, and it burned very hot. Caught on fire in the middle of the night with two NCOs inside and started cooking off rounds. I got there in time to tackle the E-6 that had been in the driver's compartment and extinguish his flames before the tank blew up.

My TC/platoon leader recommended me for the Soldier's Medal, but nobody saw what I did so it was denied. Almost 9 years ago I got 100% disability from the VA for PTSD from it.
