Yes I do remember the howitzer ammunition explosions. I was working with a group of kids, from the post school, in the gumnasium. The explosions blew out several windows and did scare us until we found out what happened.
We put the kids in the center of the gym floor and waited until we could leave the gym safely.
Phil...
The information on the internet never ceases to amaze me.
I had many jobs, while at Ponds Barracks, because I had a medical restriction so they moved me around. I was reinlistmemt clerk for Sgt. Cambell for a period of time so our paths may very well have crossed.
I was moved out of reinlistment after I tried to talk one soldier out of reinlisting. As I recall, Sgt. Campbell was really mad as he missed his quota for that month.
I'm retired now and my wife and I have talked about visiting Germany and spending a day at Amberg. I know it's not a military base any more but it still might be interesting to see what;s changed.
Good hearing from you,
Phil...
PS - On a side note, when I was working a while back, I was heavily involved with QS 9000, the automotive version of ISO 9000.
I was at Pond Barracks 9/69--3/71. Welcome to the site ,were you still there. Was the mess SGT. a guy named CROWE there ??
