Hi Don! I got there in October of '71 and was assigned to D company. I remember those M-88's which we called the tank retriever. They burned mo-gas instead of diesel and I believe they used gallons-per-mile instead of the other way around. I remember one driver named Palmeter (sp?) whom they called "Palm Tree" and sometimes just "Tree." He smoked a pipe and I remember how amazing he was on that M-88. When you needed a new engine pack or anything, you'd see him come smoking that pipe with flames belching out the back of that old tank retriever. Great memories!
Good to know I didn't fry all my brain cells. my email address is; deboxjr@aol.com I went back to the steel mill when I got out.Went into the skilled crafts. My ex,linda and me had a couple of boys. I still see her all the time, we remain good friends. She just got tired of being married to an asshole.Workin' 80 or more hours a week and drinkin' 40 hours a week must have gotten to her. I gave the stuff up about 21`years ago.Got tired of puttin' lawyers kids through college. I do a little weldin' and buildin' now. keep a couple of old harley's runnin' and try to stay busy with off the wall projects. went to college a couple of times but never did get my degree. My youngest is always on my case to go ahead and finish my B.A. I don't see much of a demand for retired millwrights with an english lit. degree. I never did go to the 2nd Cav sight very often but I got a message from a friend of Eva Rudarmel. Do you remember Les? She said Les passed away about 4 years ago. I hope to hear from her again soon. I'd like to get in touch with some of the guys if I can find them. Eva (Les' wife) is trying to find another good ol' Texas boy. Ron Ensley, remember that smilin' cowboy? He's from the San Antonio area I think.Linda has family there and about 35 years ago they tried to find him for me but they drew a blank. Dop me an email I look forward to hearin' from you. Later bud
Happy Birthday Don!! I was in D Troop maintenance from 1962 to 1964, I also drove the M-88, it was D-8 check out my Photos.
