Rob looking at your pics brings back alot of good memories of you guys and the mentorship you guys provided that stuck with me throughout my 20 year career. when i retired in Oct 2006 at FT. Hood CSM Gravins was retireing around the same time, also at FT. Hood i regret that i never caught up with him but i am sure he is still in the Kileen TX. area, and i did run into your favorite NCO 1st SG Figurora. He tried to avoid me but he new who i was and talking with his soldiers he is still the same.

Couldn't help but notice that you mentioned Michael Gravens. I had a two year break in service from 83-85 and when I came back in I ended up doing basic and AIT all over again at D/6 Cav. Gravens and Cablay were both drills there, Cablay being the senior drill. After I got to the Rock, they both ended up rotating there a couple of months later.
Not being a cherry at Basic I was able to objectively watch these guys at work and I can honestly say that I don't think I ever met a sharper, more competent soldier that CSM Gravens. As a drill, I don't think I ever heard him raise his voice. He used to command detonate 'cruits with his stare. Spend a week in that Fort Knox mud and he'd still have a crease in his BDU's and his boots spitshined. We used to call him the Icepick. On the Rock, I remember that his platoon and mine (SFC Dave Lay's) went back and forth for high this or high that. I followed his career with interest and was genuinely surprised that he never got selected for SMA. He'd would have made a damn good one. Cheers,

did you basic at Ft. knox?
    • Keith Pape January 19, 2009 13:12
i figure he's got to be retired now - i talked to Chapman a couple years ago - and he was just retiring (E8)- they held him over a full year, as the war had just broken out in Iraq again.

Tell us a little about your cav days.

Didn't realize how much I enjoyed my time at The Rock until leaving and being stationed at Ft. Benning. Having SFC Michael Graven's, who later went on to be the USAREUR CSM, as my Platoon Sgt reflected on the rest of my career. Out of all the people I met in my 8 years in the ones I served with in C Troop I feel like they were the ones I've remembered the most and want to reconnect with.
